JAZZ & WINE KLAVIER (Update: 12/26)

Local Jazz and Overseas Wine at the Perfect Spot
 [updated December 2025]

Experience authentic Tokyo jazz at Jazz & Wine Klavier in Asagaya! For jazz fans visiting Tokyo, Asagaya is a must-visit district with a deep music history, and Klavier is one of the main staples in the Asagaya jazz scene. While you can find great live jazz elsewhere in Tokyo, Jazz & Wine Klavier is simply the perfect place to get that friendly local vibe with an affordable price. That is something you won’t get at expensive jazz clubs in Tokyo, such as the Blue Note. At Klavier in Asagaya you can experience top-quality jazz musicians in a local atmosphere, while enjoying wine and whiskey collected from around the world!

Since 1982 Klavier has greatly contributed to the lively jazz scene of Asagaya, including the Asagaya Jazz Streets Festival. Currently they have live music every Saturday night, with plans to add Fridays from April 2026. The current owner, Chika, reopened Klavier in March 2025, after the previous owner, Mr. Yamakawa, retired—He still visits to play piano on certain nights, however. Chika herself is also an accomplished jazz singer, and for that reason she also speaks very good English! She told us that taking over Klavier was her way of giving back to the jazz community that raised her. The venue is now completely smoke-free and has more bilingual staff. They also hold “open-mic” type sessions on occasion for amateur musicians to bring their own instruments and jam. But Mr. Yamakawa’s 40+ years of running the place have also left behind many gifts, namely his extensive music collection and Bourbon and Scotch whisky collection. That means even on weekday nights when there is no live show, you can still enjoy great music and a huge selection of whisky, with a menu detailing where in Scotland it’s from and what year. Mr. Yamakawa was quite the collector, but Chika also brings to the table with her a collection of wine from all around Europe, hence the new title “Jazz & Wine” in the name.

The drink menu is extensive and beyond the wine and whiskey includes soft drinks, beer, cocktails, and a lot more. Snacks such as mixed nuts, chocolate, cheese and salami, and more are available daily. On nights with live jazz there is also a daily live food menu, which may feature dishes like cheese quesadillas and others.

At Klavier you’ll enjoy watching live shows performed by very accomplished and passionate jazz players, both young and old. The list of performers that have graced Klavier with their presence over the years is extensive, but it includes such high-profile musicians as bassist Mitsuaki Furuno, guitarist Satoshi Inoue, and pianist Yoko Kobayashi. Photos are from a session with pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, bassist Hiroshi Kagawa, and drummer Setsuo Sato. Be sure to check Klavier’s website to see who’s playing, but chances are even if you don’t know who they are you’re going to enjoy a lovely evening of some top-notch jazz. So pull up a chair, order some delicious drinks and snacks and enjoy!
